The EMS Quality Academy is a resource for EMS quality managers, medical directors, those coordinating systems of care for time sensitive conditions, and others interested in quality management for emergency healthcare.

The emphasis here will be on the initial training, continuing education and on-going professional development of EMS quality managers and others who have emergency care quality management responsibilities included in their job descriptions.

The Academy will also help those interested in the design, implementation, and refinement of quality management programs for EMS provider organizations, emergency-related clinical service lines in hospitals, and systems of care for time sensitive conditions.

Most of the content at the EMS Quality Academy content is offered free of charge, although fees may be required for  some content and courses. Those offerings will be clearly marked.

What's Happening

Data Aggregation Webinar

This webinar held in conjunction with the American College of Cardiology was the latest in our series, Taking Clinical Quality to the Next Level. We address the rationale and ‘how to’s’ for combining data across multiple cases, organizations, and sources. The main presentation was given by Mic Gunderson. Tom Bouthillet provided commentary and moderated the question and answer session.

Data Aggregation: Looking Across Cases, Organizations and Regions

From the Taking Clinical Quality to the Next Level webinar series.

Aggregate data provide the critical information needed to improve clinical, operational and financial outcomes across entire organization, regions, states and more. This webinar explores proper techniques and common pitfalls when aggregating data; such as, using normalization for comparisons.

Join Mic Gunderson and moderators Tim Phalen and Tom Bouthillet for this webinar to help take your EMS and time sensitive systems of care quality efforts to the next level.

Costly Consequences from the Misdiagnosis of Data Variations

From the Taking Clinical Quality to the Next Level webinar series.

When monitoring the performance of a clinical or non-clinical process, it is easy to misinterpret the variations that can occur. Sometimes variations are expected and some are from ‘special causes’ that need to be recognized and addressed. Unfortunately, misinterpreting normal for ‘special cause’ variation or vice versa can have consequences, often severe. This webinar explores:

  • The differential diagnosis of normal and special cause data variation
  • The potential consequences from misdiagnosis of data variations
  • Tools that can dramatically improve the accuracy of your data variation diagnoses

Composite Measures: Use and Development

From the Taking Clinical Quality to the Next Level webinar series.

Combining multiple measures into one composite measure can help summarize performance for reporting. This webinar presents several options to consider when combining measures and the pitfalls you should avoid.

Join Mic Gunderson, Tim Phalan, Tom Bouthillet for this informational webinar.

Advanced Performance Measure Development: Process Capability Indexes

From the Taking Clinical Quality to the Next Level webinar series.

See how and why process performance measurement differs in processes that only need one performance specification versus processes that need two specifications. On this webinar, learn how to:

  • Interpret and utilize process capability indexes to measure process performance with two specifications.
  • Process capability indexes contrast the reality of process performance against process specifications.

Web Series

Quality Over Coffee

Stop by with your cup of coffee for a brief and casual discussion about topics related to quality management. While the content is focused on EMS, it will also be pertinent to hospital staff with an interest in quality improvement of systems of care for time sensitive conditions. The length of these episodes vary, but are typically around 5 minutes long – perfect for taking a few minutes out of your day for a knowledge and caffeine boost.

Through the Lens of Systems

This web series is intended to educate those working in emergency healthcare on the concepts, challenges, and improvement ideas related to systems of care for time sensitive conditions, like STEMI, stroke, cardiac arrest, trauma and sepsis. The episodes are usually around 10 minutes in length and each covers one very specific topic.

Consulting Services

Community-Level System Assessments and Consulting

Sometimes, problems and opportunities to improve care stretch across an entire community or region. These types of change initiatives need to engage all of the provider stakeholder organizations in order to be effective. This will often require that competing organizations set aside some of their proprietary interests and to do what is best for patients and the community. More…

EMS System and Provider Organization Assessments and Consulting

EMS systems and provider organizations can catalyze dramatic internal and external improvements as a result of an independent assessment of their clinical and operational performance. The assessment results can then suggest specific recommendations for improvements.Independent assessments and recommendations are widely utilized by EMS systems and EMS provider organizations all over the world.
