Where EMS quality management professionals come to learn, share, and collaborate

This is a community of practice for quality managers, medical directors, and others interested in EMS quality coming together to share their experiences and to help each other solve problems. We want to showcase great work and open people’s eyes to what is possible.

This is where you’ll want to come to come to continue your quality management education and professional development; share ideas and resources; and discover opportunities for QI project collaboration.

Online Study Group

Woman studyingAll members of the Collaborative are invited to participate in a regular series of study sessions. For each session, the group will be given a suggested article, chapter or document to read; or a podcast episode to listen to; maybe a vlog post to watch; or perhaps a website to check out. The group then meets online to discuss. What did we find that was useful? What did we agree or disagree with? Have any of us done something similar? Perhaps most importantly, what did we find that we’re going to try and incorporate into our own practices or our organizations – and how? Some of the things you learn about may become the basis for a policy or process change or a full-blown improvement project.

Email Discussion Group

All members of the Collaborative are enrolled into our exclusive EMS quality email discussion group. This moderated group will continue the live online discussions, which also permits those who unable to attend the live discussion to ask questions, make comments, and offer suggestions. Also use the email group to reach out to colleagues for advice and discuss topics not addressed in the study group threads.

Resource Archive

Electronic filesDuring the live online discussions and in the email discussion group, we will ask members to upload or suggest resources related to the current study topic. Those resources may be policies, procedures, protocols, other documents, links, slide decks, software tools and templates, videos, and anything else that members may find useful that is related to the current topic. Those resources will then be placed into the Resource Archive for the topic that can uses by Collaborative members. A link to the video recording of each live online discussion group session will also be included in the archive.

QI Project Collaboration

Maybe there’s a QI project you’re planning to do or there’s one of interest that you heard about during the live or email group discussions. Perhaps it’s a project you’d like to do in collaboration with some of the other EMS organizations represented in the group. The EMS Quality Collaborative will help facilitate such efforts.

Does all of this sound like something you and your organization would benefit from? Click the enrollment button below for information on how to join.

Online Study Group Format

Frequency

The study group will meet 3-4 times per month in a video conference format, but you do not need to attend every session to learn, share and participate. Attend as often as your schedule permits. Watch the recording of live sessions you missed. Use the email discussion group to ask questions and read or participate in the conversations.

Style

The study group sessions are modeled after the best parts of graduate seminars. Before each session, you’ll get a suggested study assignment to check out. The group will then come together for a conversation about the information and look for ways to implement what was learned. In some cases, the discussions may lead to identification of a QI project opportunity with opportunities for multiple EMS organizations to collaborate. No grades – just come to learn, network, collaborate and grow.

Study Session Topics

Topics will be wide ranging, covering things like performance indicators and specifications; improvement project tools; quality program design and strategy; and quality concepts / philosophies. The way we approach the topics will make it beneficial for everyone – from beginners to advanced quality management practitioners. Occasionally, we will also be have guest experts join us to share their experiences and perspectives.

The topics for the study sessions will be informed by the following resources that help define the scope of knowledge and skills that EMS quality management professionals should seek to master.

Facilitator

Study group sessions and other activities will be facilitated by Mic Gunderson, EMT-P (Ret.), FAEMS. With over 45 years of EMS experience, Mic has been focused for the last 30 years on the various aspects of quality strategy; system and process design; and quality assurance / improvement.
